Idris Elba thinks 'Luther' will come to an end after its third series.

The 40-year-old actor has strongly hinted his days of playing titular Detective Chief Inspector John Luther in the BBC One psychological crime drama are coming to an end.

Quizzed whether the new series - which returns on July 2 at 9pm - would be the last, he told Digital Spy: "If I'm honest, I think, yeah, it might be. There is the option of specials - one-offs - but I'm not sure whether we're actually going to do that.

"That's the plan. But as far as another series is concerned, I don't think we're going to do any more."

'The Wire' actor revealed plans for turning the popular show into a film are underway, with screenwriter Nick Cross busy developing the plot for an "old-school thriller" style movie.

Idris added: "I think the film would be a bit more interesting to make, to be honest. We think we are a film when we're making our show, so I think we should go all the way."

The star also touched upon the global success of the show and said casting a "ballsy f**king 6-foot tall black guy" as the lead role is responsible for its popularity in the US.

Idris explained: "I think the audacity of the show is what really appeals to Americans, and seeing it come from the English, who typically do more tailored TV.

"'Luther' plays like an American show but with English characters, and I think that's part of its appeal there. They're not seeing stiff upper lip TV, they're seeing this ballsy f**king 6-foot tall black guy kick some arse!"
