The 'Line of Duty' actress will play career woman Emma Averill in a six-part Paramount Plus series based on Sarah Pinborough's novel of the same name as her character fears she is losing her mind when her dream life becomes a nightmare.

The synopsis reads: "A couple of weeks before her 40th birthday, Emma stops sleeping — just as her mother had done right before she suffered a violent psychotic breakdown on the night of her own 40th birthday.

"Emma’s mother always told her she’d go the same way, that she had the same 'bad blood', and now Emma’s terrified it’s true.

"As events worsen, Emma’s world starts to unravel, and she realises that only by investigating the truth of her painful past can she find the answers to her present and prevent tragedy from striking a second time."

The series - which is due to air in 2024 - is being made by Left Bank Pictures - the production company behind 'The Crown' - alongside Vicky's Build Your Own Films, and 'The Midwich Cuckoos' director Börkur Sigthorsson will be at the helm.

In a statement, Vicky said: "Myself and BYO Films are really excited to be working alongside Left Bank on 'Insomnia'.

"It’s a very different role for me, Sarah Pinborough has written such an exciting script.

"We have a fantastic cast, crew and production team all set for a very fulfilling few months ahead!"

She will be joined by Tom Cullen as Emma's husband Robert, while Smylie Bradwell and India Fowler will play their children Will and Chloe.

Emma's estranged sister Phoebe - who shows up unexpectedly - will be portrayed by Leanne Best, with Corinna Marlowe cast as their mother Patrica.

Rounding out the cast are Dominic Tighe and Jade Harrison as family friends Julian and Michelle Simpson, Lyndsey Marshal as Caroline, Robert Gilbert as Faisal and Michelle Bonnard as DI Hildreth.
