As Love Island drama continues in the villa – much of it centred around one of this year’s stars, Gemma Owen – former professional footballer and, Gemma’s father Michael Owen, has also been getting involved in responding to some pretty vile comments on Twitter.

Under-18s football coach Paul Proud sent Michael a message on Twitter, after he said he didn't want to see his 19-year-old daughter kissing on the ITV reality dating series.

Paul said to him: “Can’t wait to see her getting smashed,” followed by a string of emojis showing crying-laughing faces and a thumbs-up.

Michael was left disgusted by the comment, hitting back with a mature and dignified response: "What a fine example to set from a man in your responsible position."

According to Paul's Twitter account, he has been a scout and manager for the under-18s academy at Glasgow City FC, which aims to bring young girls and women into the beautiful sport. He's also said to have been an ex-professional player himself.

Since the tweet, Paul’s account has been deleted and, unconfirmed reports say that he has resigned from his position.

Following the response, Michael said that there were “hundreds of examples” of people speaking about his daughter in the same way, but he had decided to highlight Paul to show what sort of things were being said.

He added: "Good job I'm used to dressing room banter/taking stick."

Gemma's journey on Love Island is set to get bumpier, with the arrival of her ex-boyfriend, professional rugby league player Jacques O'Neill, onto the show.

Though Jacques was quick to start flirting with Gemma upon his debut, she told him that she wasn’t interested in getting back together and that he could flirt away, but not to expect anything back.

She is currently coupled up with 23-year-old Luca Bish, despite telling him he had an “unfortunate” surname during their first 48-hours in the villa.

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and on the ITV Hub.
