The monarch's annual message - which focused on hope amid the coronavirus pandemic - attracted an audience of 8.14 million people across BBC One, ITV and Sky News, according to new figures.

'Call The Midwife' had the second-highest number of viewers, with 5.43 million, while 'Blankety Blank' drew an audience of 5.26 million.

'Mrs Brown's Boys' came in seventh position on the list - one spot behind 'Coronation Street' - with an audience of 3.81 million.

'The Queen's Christmas message' saw the monarch remind Brits that they are "not alone" during the pandemic.

The 94-year-old royal claimed that the ongoing crisis has "brought us closer".

She said: "In the United Kingdom and around the world, people have risen magnificently to the challenges of the year, and I am so proud and moved by this quiet, indomitable spirit."

The Queen - who has been living at Windsor Castle during the pandemic - also expressed sympathy for people who have been unable to see their friends and family during 2020.

She explained: "Of course for many, this time of year will be tinged with sadness - some mourning the loss of those dear to them and others missing friends and family members distanced for safety, when all they really want for Christmas is a simple hug or a squeeze of the hand.

"If you are among them, you are not alone, and let me assure you of my thoughts and prayers."
