Sophie Raworth has been left “utterly heartbroken” by the death of her dog Winnie.

The 52-year-old newsreader took to social media to tell fans her cavapoo puppy - which is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle - had been hit by a car last week, and has subsequently passed away.
She wrote alongside a snap of her holding Winnie: “Our gorgeous cavapoo puppy Winnie died on Friday night. She was hit by a car, chasing squirrels. I never knew it was possible to love a dog that much. A total joy and my constant companion. She was also my newest running buddy. She loved running. Utterly heartbroken (sic)”
Following the sad news, the BBC newsreader was inundated with messages of support, including some kind words from ‘BBC Breakfast’ presenter Dan Walker.
He replied to her tweet: “Very sorry to hear that Sophie. They just become such an important part of life. Sending much love from our Winnie to you and the family (sic)”
And television star Davina McCall also reached out, writing: “Noooooooooo…. nooo .. I’m so sorry x (sic)”
Fellow BBC newsreader Ashitha Nagesh commented: “This is such sad news, I’m so sorry for your loss x. (sic)”
Many of Sophie’s followers also reached out to her, sharing photos of their own pets who they had sadly lost and relating to her experience.
The ‘BBC News at Six’ and ‘BBC News at Ten’ presenter recently opened up on the pressure of presenting news about the coronavirus pandemic, as she said she was left feeling “claustrophobic” while on air.
She said: “It was the first story I’ve ever done where it wasn’t something you could escape. After all, it’s affecting your life as much as everybody else’s.
“This has been like no story I’ve done before. At work we live and breathe it, there’s no escape whatsoever. I did start to feel really claustrophobic. Everybody’s world is just that bit smaller.”
