The ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ alum has not been approached to compete on the BBC One star-studded Latin and ballroom competition, which his wife Tess Daly, 53 - the mother of his two daughters Phoebe, 18, and Amber, 13 - presents alongside Claudia Winkleman, 50.

The 48-year-old broadcaster told OK! magazine: “I’ve never been asked, to be honest with you.”

Vernon admitted to not considering the conflict of interest, that Tess is a presenter on the programme, as he detailed being “good friends with” the team, such as new judge and longtime professional dancer on the show Anton Du Beke.

He said: “I never thought of that. I’m good friends with many of them – I play golf with Anton. So yes, maybe that’s why they haven’t asked me. I do enjoy the process of getting to know the dancers. I enjoy watching their rehearsal tapes and I enjoy sitting down with Tess and watching ‘It Takes Two’.”

The BBC Radio 2 presenter called the series “the only appointment-to-view” show on his TV schedule.

Vernon said: “The only appointment-to-view for me is ‘Strictly’. [Each week] I dread Tess tripping up when she comes around the corner on the stage. I make sure I’m watching after the titles, when Tess says, 'Hello and welcome to 'Strictly'', and Claudia says something. I just want to make sure that she’s done the opening link without tripping on her beautiful gown.”

The sometime ‘This Morning’ presenter labelled his “good friend” Mike Tindall - the ex rugby player and husband of the late Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter Zara Tindall - “a top bloke”.

Mike is currently competing in the Ant and Dec-fronted ITV reality show 'I'm A Celebrity', which Vernon appeared on in 2020.

Vernon said: “I love Mike Tindall, he’s a good friend of mine. We play a lot of golf together.

“I think he’s got the perfect personality, the perfect character to be successful on 'I’m a Celebrity' because he’s a man’s man. He listens, he has his own opinions but he likes to debate. He and Zara are absolutely brilliant. I think he’s a top bloke.”
