Joe said watching the video message from his mum made his so emotional ‘it tore me to pieces.’

‘It’s the most emotional I’ve been for years, really hit a nerve and it feels like we haven’t seen them for years.

‘Everyone’s had it, had a grizzle. It was sad to see Simon go but I know he’s round the pool right now with a beer in one hand and his girlfriend in the other hand.’

Reflecting on his first day when he won the Trauma Tank Trial, he said he knew that although ‘he screamed like a girl’ it worked for him as he knew he wouldn’t then have to arrive in the camp by jumping out of a plane, his worst nightmare.

‘My first memory of arriving in camp was that this was beautiful but I was voted to do the first trial which was the disgusting food. It was called I Scream Van and realized this was my second worst nightmare. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do it or not but thought I’d beat Nicola, a glamour model. When I think back to it now it was like having an out of body experience. ‘
