Coronation Street is never afraid to give its roster of soap stars a shakeup, and that’s exactly what they’ll be doing when Shayne Ward bows out of the long-running ITV drama a little later this year. Having first made his debut as Aidan Connor back in 2015, this spring will see the character leave the Street for good, but exactly how remains to be seen.

Faye Brookes, who stars as Ward’s on-screen sister Kate in the soap, recently did an interview with The Sun and suggested that the decision to write Aidan out of future storylines was one made behind-the-scenes, rather than because Ward wanted to leave the soap.

She said: “I still feel really sad about it, and I think he’s probably going to be upset about it until [Shayne] goes. It’s a difficult thing to deal with, but I totally understand why they’ve done it. I’m absolutely devastated that he’s going, but I also realise you have to go with the changes.

“He is like my brother off screen, too, and probably the only person I truly confide in at work. He came in at the same time as me, he has the same background as my boyfriend [Gareth Gates], and he gets me and he gets Gareth. But he will take the bull by the horns and go with it.”

One of the biggest rumours surrounding Aidan’s exit is that he’ll get back with Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley), and the pair will leave the Street, along with pregnant Eva’s baby. Eva may have promised the child to Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor), but as we know in soap land, all is never as it seems! This is going to be an interesting one to watch play out…

Coronation Street continues on ITV throughout the week.
