He's faced an emotional couple of weeks before he goes, after the attack on Sharon at The Albert and his exam results which deliver worse news than he expected, and things prove to be too much for the young Carter.
Credit: BBCLinda and Johnny will face some back and forth before he goes. When he admits he failed some of his exams, she hides her disappointment but pays his university lecturer a visit behind his back asking him to reconsider the results he's dished out.
When she returns to the Queen Vic, she's convinced by her son Johnny - who has discovered where she's been - to sing in front of the packed pub.
Belting out one of her favourites, it becomes clear how awful she is behind the microphone and Johnny's stich-up leads to an angry showdown.
There's no word yet on whether we have seen the last of Johnny for good, but we don't think he'd bow out of the soap forever with these scenes.
