'Hollyoaks' star Modupe Adeyeye was "excited" when she found out about her transgender storyline.

The soap newcomer - who plays Blessing Chamber - insists she wasn't nervous about playing a transgender character in the Channel 4 soap and relished in the opportunity to sink her teeth into a gritty plot.

She said: "I'm not transgender so I've had to do a lot of research into it. I wasn't nervous, I was more excited. It's a big responsibility, but I always think that you should challenge yourself and not run away from things that are hard. When things are easy, that's when I get scared, because as an actor you need challenges, that's what makes you stronger and better in your craft."

Blessing will be desperate to keep her transgender secret from the residents of Hollyoaks village, but this proves a hard task when a private investigator begins digging into her past.

The character, who had a troubled youth including a stint in juvenile detention, has started a new life in Chester after cutting ties with her family.

Modupe explained to SoapSquawk.co.uk: "She was born Tyson Delaney. Tyson's parents always knew something wasn't right because he always wanted to play with the girls and their dolls. His dad would always tell him to stop because he was a boy and should be playing with other boys. So he rebelled to spite them.

"That's when Tyson started hanging around in gangs and doing stupid things, he got into trouble and went to a juvenile detention centre. When he came out that's when he decided he didn't want to live that life any more, he knew he wasn't being himself. So he decided to start a new life."
