Though we haven't seen Agents Mulder and Scully in action since 2008 movie X-Files: I Want to Believe, that will soon change when the television series is brought back for a limited run, following its conclusion on the FOX network in 2002.

To this point, hype surrounding The X-Files has been huge, and FOX have delivered a stellar campaign of soundbites, video clips and teasers, and this week even more new promotional material has surfaced, with three posters debuting on The Wrap.

According to the website, these are the final three images for the rebooted series ahead of its comeback in January 2016.

The first features an eye with a dark X across it, whilst the other two show an alien hand behind glass, and feature a twist on the 'I Want to Believe' poster which viewers saw hanging in Mulder's office during the TV show's nine year run.

Creator Chris Carter recently said that the new episodes will consist primarily of standalone episodes, and actress Gillian Anderson said aliens won't be involved at all.

Speaking to The Sun, she said: "Will there be aliens in it? No, no aliens this year, sorry. It will be scary. I hope it will be good.

"There'll be some laughs and I think overall, even though I haven't seen any of it, I'm most pleased with the fact it feels like what we used to deliver. And that's kind of what the audience and the fans seem to want. I think we have accomplished that. So hopefully it will be successful."

Despite that it does seem as if aliens will be making their presence known in some form - or these new posters could just be one big red herring.

The X-Files returns January 24 on FOX in the US, with a broadcaster and premiere date still to be set in the UK.
