A PETA supporter, dressed in a huge 'Karl Lagerfeld' grim reaper costume landed at Fendi's 90th Anniversary Haute Fourrure fashion show in Rome last week. The PETA representative held a sign that read "Fur Is Death" in an effort to protest against the use of fur within the fashion house.

The protester carried a white cat prop to bring attention to how much the designer loves his cat, Choupette, while other animals are dying for their fur.

"Karl Lagerfeld is the Grim Reaper of fashion, doling out violent death sentences to countless animals, just for tacky, vulgar fur", says PETA Director Mimi Bekhechi. "PETA is calling on Lagerfeld to join Armani, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein in ditching cruelly obtained fur - and asks kind shoppers to ban Fendi from their closets until this happens."

PETA - whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to wear" - reminds us that 85% of fur sold currently comes from factories where minks, foxes and other animals are held in cages for all of their lives. They are then taken from the awful smelling sheds and skinned- often alive for their fur.

There have been many investigations into the treatment of animals and conditions on fur farms, which have exposed suffering, untreated wounds, missing limbs and psychological distress. Undercover investigators have also seen the rotting corpses of mothers in cages with their babies.

Many top fashion designers - including Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood and Tommy Hilfiger - are completely fur-free.
