Making changes to your lifestyle is the most successful way to lose weight

After all that effort to lose a few pounds, denying yourself those treats you crave and working hard doing exercise all with the possibility that after a few months the weight will creep back on, and then some.

We've all done it, gone on a diet to shift weight for an occasion, only to find six weeks after it, we gained all of the weight back with usually an extra ound or two sitting around the middle.

"The problem is, that with most traditional diets, the behaviours that help people lose weight aren't the same as those that help them maintain their new body," says Dian Griesel, Ph.D. and Tom Griesel, co-authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust.

New research also supports this idea. The study analysed whether two distinct sets of thought patterns and behaviours were associated with inital weight-loss, losing 10 oer cent of your body weight in year, and long-term weight management, maintaining the loss for a year.

The study, carried out by Dr. Christopher Sciamanna and a team of scientists from Penn State Univeristy, of 1,165 adults found little similarity between the two.

People who followed a consistent exercise routine and/or ate plenty of low-fat sources of protein were more likely to be successful in weight maintenance but not weight loss.  Those who did different kinds of exercises or meal planning were more likely to lose weight but not maintain the loss.

"Focusing on optimal health and losing excess body fat along with improving your body composition, not simple 'weight-loss' must be the first objective of any diet.
