Which Female Sports Competitions Are Most Popular in the UK?

This fantastic story started a few debates in the UK and one of those is this - what are the most popular female sports in the United Kingdom?

Let’s find out together.

Football

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, even if you are not from the United Kingdom. England is where this beautiful sport was invented and it’s only natural to be one of the most popular sports among both men and women.

England’s finest women had a wonderful World Cup back in 2019 and they reached the semi-finals where they lost to the USA.

Now, they may not have won the medal at that event, but they won the hearts of the home supporters.

The proof of that is the fact that 11.7 million people watched the match on television. The England national team and Super League have definitely made women’s football one of the most popular sports in the country.

Tennis

It’s safe to say that tennis has always been one of the most popular sports among girls and women. Great Britain produced some wonderful players like Virginia Wade, Sue Barker, and Annabel Croft.

More recently, the honor of female tennis in Britain has been defended by talented players like Johanna Konta, Heather Watson, and Emma Raducanu.

As we already said in the introduction, Emma Raducanu made history at the US Open this year by becoming the only player ever, male or female, who managed to win a major while having to play in the qualifiers before she reach the main draw.

To make things more impressive, she didn’t drop a set throughout the entire tournament. This wonderful girl has made tennis more popular in the UK.

Swimming

Last, but certainly not the least popular sport on our list is swimming. It’s safe to say that other than the USA and Australia, Great Britain is a country that has one of the most well-organized swimming programs.

The conditions in which girls and women are training are great and the coaches are very professional.

Recently, Great Britain has had a number of wonderful and successful female swimmers.

The likes of Freya Anderson, Kathleen Dawson, Anna Hopkin, and Lucy Hope have made this country one of the most successful ones in this sport.

Also, these Olympic and European champions have inspired thousands of young girls to pursue careers in swimming. Considering the fact that swimming is one of the healthiest sports a kid could practice, we can honestly say that these successful swimmers have made sure that the generations of young girls will grow up healthy. At the end of the day, that is the most important thing.
