A Los Angeles hospital researcher has been jailed for four months for reading the confidential health files of stars including Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Former UCLA School of Medicine employee Huping Zhou was sentenced in Los Angeles on Tuesday (27Apr10). He was also fined $2,000 (£1,250) for snooping.

He pleaded guilty to a series of privacy violations after admitting to checking out the private records of celebrities.

Drew Barrymore, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Osbourne also had their files viewed by Zhou, who was fired in 2003.

It remains a mystery what the snoop planned to do with the information he read about the stars - his lawyer insists the Chinese immigrant never attempted to sell the details to tabloid newspapers or websites, according to the Associated Press.
