Every week at Female First, we're taking a look back at some of the things of the past that have brought us joy and entertained us for countless hours. Happy Throwback Thursday!

Today, we'll be taking a look back at some of the most popular and memorable cartoon characters from childhood. From Johnny Bravo to Homer Simpson, here are some of our favourites...

SpongeBob SquarePants

Still running to this day, SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the most addictive and hilarious cartoons for kids, even when watching as an adult! Following the adventures of a square yellow sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, with his pet snail, Gary, the series delves into the lives of the residents in Bikini Bottom, including best friend Patrick the starfish, and Krusty Krabs owner, Mr. Krabs.

Dexter

The introduction to Dexter's Laboratory is something that will stick in our minds forever! The curious boy-genius and inventor hides a laboratory in his bedroom, keeping it secret from the world and even his own parents. Whilst he's dismissed as meddling and patronising by many, he's actually the reason the world has survived on a number of occasions. Seeing him save the planet was a lot of fun! Unfortunately, the show came to an end in 2003, but re-runs are often on the kids channels.

Johnny Bravo

Airing until 2004, Johnny Bravo wasn't the most feminist of children's shows, but it was certainly an entertaining watch. Most of what we saw was the titular character trying to get women to date him, often failing to pick any of them up with his cheesy pick-up lines.

Scrooge McDuck

First appearing as a miser and antihero, Scrooge McDuck eventually became a charitable full-on hero, explorer and adventurer. He's been a part of many different stories that have been told, even enjoying his own video game, and appearances in others! If you get the chance to go back and check out some old episodes of DuckTales, make sure you jump at the opportunity!

Pinky and The Brain

With Pinky and the Brain plotting to take over the world, but always falling a little short, the cartoon chaos we saw take place between 1995 and 1998 was some of the most entertaining of its time! What we didn't realise as kids was that many episodes of the series were parodies of films, novels, or even political events!

Homer Simpson

He might be a bumbling fool, but he's our bumbling fool. Homer Simpson is not a good father, husband, or worker. He's great at drinking beer and failing in many of his objectives, but we wouldn't go as far to say he's got a bad heart. Loveable and, unfortunately, relatable on many levels, we're still watching him go through his misfortunes and adventures to-date. Bring on many more episodes!
