The popular action-adventure game was developed by Naughty Dog and released in 2013, and after releasing a sequel titled ‘The Last of Us II’ last year, it has now been confirmed the development team are working on a remake of the original game.

A new report from Bloomberg claims the remake will still be made by Naughty Dog, and says attempts to remake the game actually began three years ago, when Sony’s Visual Arts Service Group were handed the task.

Visual Arts Service Group founder Michael Mumbauer recruited about 30 people, from inside Sony and out, to create a new division that would develop a remake of ‘The Last of Us’ specifically for the PlayStation 5, but when the team didn’t get the funding or support it needed, Sony opted to shift development over to Naughty Dog.

The Bloomberg report also claims Sony Bend, the studio behind 2019 survival game ‘Days Gone’, are now working on a new ‘Uncharted’ game and have abandoned plans to create a sequel to ‘Days Gone’.

One team at Sony Bend is now assisting Naughty Dog on “a multiplayer game” which has not yet been announced, although it could tie in to the ‘Last of Us’ franchise as Naughty Dog previously announced plans to make a standalone ‘Last of Us’ multiplayer title.

As of the time of writing, the report has not been confirmed by Naughty Dog or Sony Bend, and details for any of the rumoured titles – including any release dates – have not been announced.
