There’s a buzz in the beauty business about Cannabidiol (CBD) from the cannabis plant, not the kind that makes you high, but the strain that can alleviate pain if taken internally. It’s now being used in body and hair products due to ant-inflammatory and pain relief properties, and is said to be able to treat skin problems such as wrinkles and acne. Sales have literally doubled in the past year!

Celebrities such as Olivia Wilde, use the product to help her neck relax before going on stage. Morgan Freeman and Whoopi Goldberg have been using CBD for a long time to treat painful conditions, Jennifer Aniston says she uses CBD to combat stress and Victoria Secrets Model Alessandra Ambrosio says CBD Oil “Helps me sleep when I’m anxious.”

So I’ve been doing a little digging to find out more how CBD oil helps for topical use on the skin.

What is CBD oil?

First discovered as an aid for epilepsy and medicinal purposes, CBD is from the cannabis plant but with the THC taken out so there are no highs! It is made from the leaves and flowers from the hemp plant as opposed to the seed oil, which is known as hemp oil.

Is it legal?

Yes if it has less than 0.03% of THC content then it’s classed as hemp oil not cannabis.

Is it safe?

Yes as far as I am aware, but as yet there is no study or regulations to indicate the correct dosage so if you are going to use it buy it from a reputable company.

What's so good about it?

CBD is a natural source of Omega-3 & 6 essential fatty acids. Slathered on the skin it accumulates in the upper skin layers to reduce pain, inflammation, redness, irritation, reduce the signs of ageing, and by regulating oil production in the sebaceous glands can also help with acne and eczema.

How does it work?

The human body produces its own cannabinoids CB1 for movement, emotions and mood, then CB2 for inflammation and pain. Researchers originally believed that CBD attached itself to the CB1 and CB2 receptors, but they now believe that CBD directs the body to use more of its own cannabinoids.
