Enjoy the party and don't end up sick

Summer is on it's way and this should hopefully means that the summer party and BBQ invites are on there way.

So to help you get ready for another party season we have tips from Dr Mike Smith that will help you get through it without letting your health take a back seat.

He says: "Drinking heavily, in particular binge drinking, plays havoc on the respiratory process. Snoring and heavy breathing, often brought about by a deep drink-induced sleep can dry out the throat, but more importantly interrupts the safe passage of oxygen to all the muscles in your body, including those in your throat which helps to move particles through the body efficiently and reduce the chance of infection settling in."

In addition, alcohol can increase your likelihood of becoming dehydrated, and mild dehydration is known to make sore throats more of a problem.

There is also a big consequence on the medics, as GPs with a list of 2,000 patients will see 120 cases of sore throat annually and £60m per annum cost to the NHS for GP consultations for sore throat.

Dr Smith continues: “The party season also makes sore throats more of a problem due to smoking. Not only will it hinder your recovery once you have a sore throat but it also makes the chance of viral or bacterial infection more likely. Regular smokers are often more prone to coughing, and if they develop a persistent cough this can also cause a sore throat.”

When it comes to treatment, experts believe that the best solution is one that lets the body ‘get on’ with its own defensive work.

Dr Mike Smith comments: “Get your hands on something that will get straight to the site of the pain, such as an anaesthetic throat spray, but let the inflammatory process get on with it.  It’s highly likely that it’s a viral cause and nature will overcome it in almost all cases –given time, adequate liquid intake and a day or two in bed when really needed.”

Ultra Chloraseptic® Anaesthetic throat spray- three sprays straight to the site of pain, can numb sore throats in seconds - no Benzocaine spray is stronger. Available from pharmacies and large supermarkets without prescription. Priced £5.21 with each bottle containing over 30 adult doses (100 sprays).

Our skin is our largest organ, and the biggest tell tale sign of inner stresses and ill health, meaning the late nights and party tipples can show in your complexion.

Curling, crimping, straightening and copious amounts of hairspray mean that although you look uber glamorous on the outside your hair may be feeling less than its lustrous best. The same stresses can be placed on your nails, with lashings of nail varnish applied and the daily dishwashing taking place, your nails can become weaker and more prone to splitting and breaking. Silica-EPO Hair, Skin and Nails can help keep your skin conditioned and your hair and nails looking glamorous and at their best, giving you peace of mind day and night and make sure you stand out at every party for all the right reasons. Silica-EPO Hair, Skin and Nails is available from Boots and costs £8.99, for a 30 day supply (30 silica tablet & 30 evening primrose oil capsules)
