Don't get stressed about eating out on a diet

One in five calorie-conscious Brits are shunning their friends in favour of their figures, admitting they would cancel plans, or have done so in the past, for fear of ruining their diet.

Perhaps justifying their worries, more than one in ten say they end up eating more when they’re with friends who aren’t watching their weight.

According to a survey of 1,000 people carried out on behalf of PizzaExpress, over a quarter of women and 12 per cent of men admit to sabotaging their weight loss at the slightest sniff of a meal out.

In an attempt to stay on the straight and narrow, seven per cent of Brits will now only visit restaurants with lighter options and one in twenty will only visit restaurants that publish the calorie-content of their dishes.

Meanwhile eight per cent of people keep track of the calories they consume by either writing them down of logging them on an app.

Up to 70 per cent of women and 48 per cent of men say they will embark on a diet this summer so to help dieters who feel they have to miss out on eating out, Fitness and Wellbeing Expert, Jessie Pavelka, has created a series of top tips and explains: “To feel great we need to eat well for life, not just for a few weeks before hitting the beach.  This means working out how to deal with things like socialising with friends who perhaps aren’t watching their weight.  The key is to know what good choices look like.”

Jessie’s top tips to eating out on a diet:

1. Plan ahead – if you know you’re going to be eating out, think about what you need to do to moderate what you’re having throughout the rest of the day.  One trick is to look up the menu online first so you order wisely.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask for your food to be adapted to suit your needs – many restaurants are happy to adapt dishes to your needs

3. Look for dishes with lots of colour – if all else fails, eating lots of fresh and colourful ingredients means you’re getting a range of nutrients

4. Check out lower carb options – we need carbs for energy

5. Go easy on the alcohol – its fine to treat yourself just don’t overdo it
