How much money do you spend on your hair routine?

Style conscious Brits spend over £28,000 during their lifetime on hair products, according to a new study.

The research by Fabriah.com, found that women happily spend around £460 a year on shampoo, conditioner and styling products.

This amounts to a massive £28,520 over the course of a lifetime, from the ages of 18 to 80, on products alone – equivalent to a world cruise or a new car.

The biggest expense was on good shampoo and conditioner which totalled £150 a year with intensive hair masks and repair treatments coming in at an additional £60. Respondents claimed this was a necessary expense to keep their hair looking bouncy and healthy.

One respondent said: “If my hair looks great then I feel great so whatever I spend on my hair is a small price to pay. My weakness is shampoos and conditioners. I swap between a few different ones and when something news comes out I just have to try it.”

Another respondent said: “I have dry hair that can be a bit on the frizzy side, so for me intensive hair masks and good hair oils are a must. Using them means I can control the frizz, my hair is well nourished and looks healthy and bouncy.”

Styling products were a big expenditure, with up to £80 spent on hairspray and a further £80 on other fixing products like waxes, gels and clays.

Those questioned spent approximately £50 a year on oils and serums with a further £40 on heat protector spray to keep their locks looking luscious.

A third added: “I once made the mistake of buying a really cheap shampoo and conditioner and haven’t made that error since. It was like putting a soapy mess on my hair which didn’t lather and left my hair feeling dirty. Now I always make sure I buy a good shampoo and conditioner, otherwise my hair just feels manky and messy.”

Francesca Davies from Fabriah.com said: “How much you spend depends on the quality of the products you buy and the length of your hair. Someone with short hair is not going to get through as much shampoo as someone with hair down to their waist.

“Good quality products are important as is picking the right product for your hair. For example, if you have coloured hair, then use a shampoo specially developed to protect against fade. If you have dry, brittle hair, then buy a good hair mask and if your hair is flyaway, you need great styling products.

“As long as you’re buying good quality products you can afford and ones developed for your hair type, then you can’t go wrong.”
