Avatar has maintained its tight grip on the top spot at the U.S. Box office for the sixth week running - taking $36 million (£22.5 million) in the past week.

James Cameron's 3D adventure has now earned $552 million (£345 million) in America, putting it within touching distance of the current box office record holder, the director's 1997 epic Titanic - which took $601 million (£375 million).

Paul Bettany's post-apocalypse thriller Legion took $18.2 million (£11.37 million) to secure second place, ahead of Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman's The Book of Eli which feel from two to three.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is back on the big screen in The Tooth Fairy. The movie follows Derek Thompson who, after a bad deed, finds himself serving an unusual sentence. He must serve one week as a real-life tooth fairy.

There was a two place drop for Sherlock Holmes which fell from three to five to round off the top five.

The week's big disappointment was Harrison Ford drama Extraordinary Measures, which took just $7 million (£4.3 million) during its opening weekend.

And this week's biggest fallers came in the form of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squealquel, and The Spy Next Door who both fell four places to end the week at eight and ten.
