The New York City fire station featured in iconic '80s movie Ghostbusters is facing closure as part of officials' budget cut plans.

The Ladder Co. 8 firehouse, which served as Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd's headquarters in the 1984 movie, is among 20 stations authorities are proposing to shut in a bid to help fill a $600 million (£375 million) budget gap.

But firefighters are fuming over the plans and insist the units are necessary to help save lives.

Steve Cassidy, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, says, "Today (Mayor) Mike Bloomberg willfully abdicated responsibility for protecting the safety of New Yorkers with his proposal to close 20 fire companies."
