Michelle Williams has revealed that she studied tapes of Marilyn Monroe as she prepared to play her in a new movie.

The actress is back on the big screen later this month for My Week With Marilyn - a role that is already being tipped for an Oscar nomination.

Speaking to Elle UK the actress said: "I studied tapes. There's really nothing that exists of her, that I could find anyway, that exists of her having a conversation with a friend.

"So there wasn't a template that existed for her everyday vocal pattern, so at a certain point you have to make it imaginatively."

My Week With Marilyn is directed by Simon Curtis and follows the production on The Prince and the Showgirl.

Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Williams, Judi Dench and Emma Watson are also on an all star cast list.

Williams received a Best Actress Oscar nomination earlier this year for her role in Blue Valentine and she could be on the verge of receiving another for this performance.

My Week With Marilyn is released 25th November.
