Pixar's latest movie Up is to open the Cannes film festival on 13 May.

The film features the voices of Ed Asner and Christopher Plummer and it will be the first time that an animated feature has opened the festival/

The screening will also be the film's world premiere.

Up is a coming of age story as Carl Fredricksen has spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest.

And, at the age of seventy eight, having seen his life pass him by he ties balloons to his house in order to fly.

Over recent years animation has become a big part of the Cannes Film Festival as Jack Black's Kung Fun Panda received it's world premiere at the festival last year, as well as grabbing all the headline.

And while it wasn't in the competition category the critically acclaimed Waltz with Bashir was, it went on to be Oscar nominated, it's not yet confirmed if Up will compete in the competition category.

The festival's director Thierry Fremaux told Digital Spy: "We are happy to have 3D open Cannes, as it is one of cinema's upcoming adventures.

"We are very proud to welcome Pixar studios, it's brilliant world, its talented directors and producers."
