Holidays

A touch of gippy tummy has spoilt many a summer holiday and, while the perennial problem may be amusing on humorous seaside postcards, it’s certainly no joke if you are a sufferer.

In fact, it’s not surprising that we can encounter digestive and bowel problems, particularly whilst holidaying in more exotic overseas locations where different cultures and culinary preferences place us in a ‘strange’ environment.

The balance of essential bodily functions can easily be disrupted by a change in routine and diet, by over-indulgence and increased alcohol consumption. All are frequently associated with that summer break.

Roger Groos, Chairman of The Association and Register of Colon Hydrotherapists says regular sufferers could benefit from a little forward planning and a pre-holiday colonic treatment session.

He explains: “Colon hydrotherapy helps tone the bowel and so encourage normal function. The effects of a single treatment can last several weeks and help tackle uncomfortable conditions such as constipation which can accompany the change in routine associated with holidays.”

The therapy takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Filtered water at body temperature is gently introduced into the rectum through sterilised equipment and fed slowly around the entire lower bowel. This softens and expels faecal matter and tones the bowel, improving function. Special massage techniques are also often used to assist the process.

Most people feel lighter, more comfortable and healthier following the treatment – not a bad way, therefore, to prepare for a few days away.

Colonic hydrotherapy should always be carried out by appropriately trained specialists. Only previously qualified therapists, medical doctors and nurses who have good knowledge of the body and how it works are accepted as ARCH members. The organisation is, in turn, a member of the General Naturopathic Council and participates in the regulation of therapy under government guidelines.
