What home comforts can you not holiday without?

Sentimental home comforts are taking up an increasing amount of space in the average suitcase, with 30 per cent of the population requiring at least two items that remind them of home while they are travelling, says new research from Samsonite.

It seems that there really is no place like home as when it comes to packing for a holiday, most of us can't go without certain 'homely' items like the iron or a framed photo of a loved one.

The younger generation has revealed that they truly feel there is no place like home, with nearly a quarter of 18-34 year olds admitting that they still pack their cuddly toy when they go abroad.

The survey also found that one in five Brits have experienced broken items in their luggage in the past, with almost half of them estimating the value of this damage to be up to £100.

This may go some way to explaining why this summer saw a 41 per cent rise in the sale of hard suitcases, although further findings from the survey reveal that it isn’t just fragile items that Brits are worried about travelling with, it's the sentimental things they are most protective over.

Living up to our reputation of being a nation of fussy eaters who aren’t willing to experiment in new cuisines, 14 per cent of 18-24 year olds also take Cadbury’s chocolate on holiday with them and 17 per cent travel with their favourite cereal.

Lisa Jermy, Samsonite Marketing Manager for the UK & Ireland, said: “The combination of travellers packing both fragile and sentimental items goes some way to explaining why this year has seen such a large increase in the sale of hard cases.

"As a luggage brand we understand that today’s traveller is increasingly looking for durable yet lightweight, maneuverable pieces which actively ease the stress of travel and eliminates the likelihood of breakages," she added.

The most popular home comforts taken on holiday this year included the following items:

  • Framed photo of a loved one
  • Slippers
  • Dressing Gown
  • Laptop
  • iPod
  • Kindle
  • Cuddly Toy
  • Iron
