Showtime's incredibly popular drama Homeland is back for its fifth season later this year, with new events taking place two years after those we last saw transpire in season four.

Now the first full-length official trailer for the new season has been revealed, with Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) once again taking centre-stage as the lead character. It's a smart choice for the show - seasons two and three were both critically panned, but the reinvention with Carrie in season four was met with a lot of love.

Residing in Berlin, Carrie is now working as the head of a private security for a philanthropist's firm. She's in a relationship with a lawyer and everything's going well, but when the CIA suffers a huge data breach Carrie's semi-peaceful life threatens to be shattered. The breach is traced to Berlin sending Saul, Quinn and company out to the country looking for their former colleague.

Speaking in the trailer, Carrie admits she always knew her past would come back to bite her. She's not delusional to the point of thinking she was out of everything she'd ever been a part of forever, but that doesn't mean she didn't want to try and escape.

Though there's over two minutes of visuals on display, storyline is still kept tight meaning the series could go back to its traditional ways, catching viewers off guard with big dramatic twists and turns. With Carrie short on friends and the former agent having a particular love for cocaine, things could easily go awry.

Homeland's fifth season premieres in the US on Sunday, October 4 at 9pm on Showtime.
