The BBC team behind 'Strictly Come Dancing' is to create a new gymnastics show.

The new programme, which is expected to be called 'Strictly Come Gymnastics', will see stars take on a number of gymnastic disciplines and three-time Olympic medallist Louis Smith is being lined up as a possible host or member of the presenting team for the Saturday night series.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Gymnastics might not sound like the most glamorous thing in the world but once you sprinkle some Saturday night stardust on it, it could be a big hit.

"The Olympics showed us people really like gymnastics and there are some decent stars in the sport.

"Plus there are so many different gymnastic disciplines out there, it would be a show with a lot of variety.

"Imagine watching a soap star giving the pommel horse a go, or someone from 'Downton Abbey' trying the asymmetric bars."

The programme is expected to go head-to-head with ITV's 'Britain's Got Talent' in April next year after the BBC brought 'The Voice' forward to start in January.
