A caveman statue has been placed in a Minneapolis park.

Locals have been left baffled after the statue showing the caveman encased inside a block of ice in Theodore Wirth Park but an artist has claimed responsibility for the piece.

Zach Schumack revealed that he came up with the creation in a bid to get people off their mobile phones and out of the house to experience the outdoors.

Schumack had been commissioned to create the statue for an advertising agency last year and decided to introduce it to a wider audience when it proved to be a "huge hit".

He explained to Bring Me The News: "We had always kind of had the idea - 'How fun would it be to put this thing in the woods somewhere where it just kind of shows up.'"
