Do you want to shape up for Christmas?

The majority of women diet in the run up to the Christmas party season according to new research – and experts insist that you should have already started yours.

Whether ladies want to tone-up or slim down to slip into their killer Little Black Dress (LBD), specialists at the New Atkins Nutritional Approach say 25 October, yesterday – which they have dubbed LBD-Day - is the best date to begin.

With six weeks to go before the gruelling round of office parties typically kick off, nutritionists insist starting a diet now leaves enough time to shed the pounds sensibly and with a realistic chance of dropping a dress size or losing a stone.

A new study, commissioned by the New Atkins Nutritional Approach, reveals that six out of ten women will go on a diet before Christmas, rising to two thirds of ladies under 35.

New Atkins Nutritional Approach chief nutritionist, Linda O’Byrne, said: “Crash dieting for the Christmas party is dangerous and therefore must be avoided. Drinking on an empty stomach will get you drunk quicker and any weight you have lost you will pile back on the second you start boozing and eating party food.

“There is an alternative and it is to start a sensible slimming programme at least six weeks before the party season in order to give yourself enough time to lose weight sensibly. LBD-Day is a perfect reminder of when it is best to start to think about getting in shape to fit comfortably into your favourite party dress and look your best.”

However, of those who do diet, more than a quarter still leave it too late and crash diet in the weeks leading up to the office do. Experts warn this can lead to disastrous consequences when mixed with alcohol.

Audrey Hepburn was adjudged to have worn the LBD the best, winning 40 per cent of the vote, more than 50 years after she first wore that classic Givenchy dress in hit movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Linda added: “We urge everyone to diet sensibly in the run up to Christmas, there is an alternative to crash dieting the party.

“We recommend that dieters slim down safely and effectively by cutting back on sugars and other refined carbohydrates.”
