Friday is finally here, but it's not such good news for our diets because research reveals that Friday is the unhealthiest day of the week.

The poll, by website FridayFriday.com, found we are more likely to binge drink and stuff down a fatty takeaway on a Friday than on any other night of the week – and less likely to find the time for any form of exercise.

Almost eight out of ten of those questioned said they relaxed their diet and fitness regimes on a Friday with almost two thirds admitting to enjoying alcohol without worrying too much about their recommended units.

More than six out of ten of those questioned regularly exercised but only 12% said they regularly exercised on Fridays with the rest choosing to leave their gym bags at home.

When it comes to choosing what to eat we seem to relax our standards a little on Fridays with 40% claiming they were more likely to opt for bacon sandwiches or cooked breakfasts instead of healthier choices such as porridge or museli.

Nearly half of respondents, 46%, agreed that Friday was the day of the week where there was an abundance of chocolates, cream cakes and other sweet treats floating about the workplace.

One worker said: “There is more of a relaxed atmosphere on Friday’s as the weekend approaches and it’s definitely true we eat more in our office.  We call it Foody Friday”.

Takeaways were also voted as a back-patting end of the week treat for 18% of us, who put down the oven gloves and pick up the phone in a bid to get out of the kitchen and indulge in something naughty but nice, as soon as Friday night arrives.

One fifth of us also said that Friday was the day we were most likely to have a pudding after our evening meal after a week of abstinence and restraint.

According to a spokesman for FridayFriday.com, Friday is the day when most of us like to reward ourselves.

He said: “With most of us leading busy lives, and a constant pressure to eat well, drink less and exercise more, Friday is the first day of the week when we feel we can ignore all the good advice, and indulge in a few bad habits.”

One respondent said “After counting the calories all week, the calculator goes out of the window on a Friday.  It’s the one day of the week, when I don’t worry at all about working out or what I eat or drink.”    According to the poll results it seems they are not alone.
