The 33-year-old comedian was due to record ‘Mummy’s Big Christmas Do!’ in front of an audience but he has had no choice but to pull the plug on the project due to the rise of Omicron coronavirus variant.

Writing on Instagram, he revealed: "Unfortunately due to the progression of the omicron variant I am very sad to announce we have cancelled next week's Mummy's Big Christmas Do! on Channel 4.

"Live TV involved a huge amount of people; Mummy doesn't want any of my team at risk! I'm obviously gutted - we had a very fun, loud and colourful show and I hope one day we can do it for you. Lots of love, Mummy xxx"

The show which was dubbed the "naughtiest party of the season" was set to air on Wednesday (22.12.21) at 10pm on Channel 4, with a line-up of guests including Lorraine Kelly and Bimini Bon Boulash.

The 90-minute special was meant to be hosted live in the city of Birmingham to celebrate “all things queer”. Along with special celebrity guests, the audience were also going to include LGBTQ+ icons, allies of the LGBTQ+ community, and local heroes.

Many people flooded the comment section underneath Joe’s post to express their disappointment.

The Great British Bake Off' winner Rahul Mandal wrote: “Oh no! Will miss it!"

Whilst drag performer Garry Lemon wrote: “Bummer!”

When announcing 'Mummy’s Big Christmas Do!’, Joe said: "This show combines three of my favourite things - LGBTQ+ culture, Birmingham and chaotic live television.

"Queer creativity outside of London is the most exciting it has been in years and I can’t wait to introduce Channel 4 viewers to our colourful and anarchic world, with some silliness and a few laughs thrown in.”
