The 58-year-old star was very excited ahead of her big day as she prepared to join Edinburgh University students and their families at the city's Usher Hall venue for the graduation ceremony.

Appearing on her TV show 'Lorraine' via a video link - as host Christine Lampard stood in - she said: "It's so exciting. You know what, two years again I was in this very hall, in Usher Hall, and I was watching my Rosie graduate, which was amazing - and they've given me an honorary degree.

"So I'm going to get an honorary degree today, and I'm going to be with all the students, and their proud parents and their families. it's just going to be fantastic."

The TV presenter admitted it would mean a great deal to get a degree after she missed out on university life when she went straight into work on her local newspaper when she left school.

She added: "I didn't go to university, I went straight from school to working in local newspapers. So this really means a lot.

"Especially as this is where Rosie went, and where Rosie studied journalism. I'm following in her footsteps, and very proud to be doing so."

Viewers were quick to offer their congratulations on social media, and realised the importance of the special occasion.

One wrote: "What a special day, made more so considering your daughter graduated there two years ago. Enjoy every minute, don't trip on the stage! (sic)"
