1. Choose rings you’ll love for a lifetime

Wedding rings symbolise the eternal love between couples so it is imperative that the engagement and wedding ring set leaves both parties happy. The rings will be worn forever so find the jewel that makes your heart flutter, that you’ll love and cherish for all time.

2. Find a perfect pair

Some rings have been designed to pair up, whilst others will most certainly have to be custom-made, altered or purchased from diamond wedding and engagement ring specialists to ensure an impeccable design match. A jeweller’s precision and dedication needs to craft a wedding band that complements but does not compete with the engagement ring.

3. Number 3!

Don’t forget that not only do you need an engagement ring and wedding band you’re delighted with, there may be a third ring to pick out if your groom is getting jewelled up too. Whether the jeweller offers matching female and male engagement rings or you and your husband-to-be get creative with the choice, make sure the rings score 10/10 for both of you.

4. Ensure they’re beautiful on the outside

We know beauty comes from within but diamond rings definitely need to ‘wow’ aesthetically. Choose an engagement ring and wedding band that look good together. For instance, if the engagement ring has baguette side stones on the shoulders, the bridal band would look fantastic channel set with smaller baguettes for continuity.

5. Match metals

It’s advised to choose a wedding ring in the same metal as the engagement ring. If the engagement ring is crafted from platinum, the wedding band should shine in platinum too. If the couple are to have matching wedding bands (see number 3), the groom would also sport a platinum ring. Unless the couple have a particular alternative look in mind, or want to experiment with trends by mixing white and yellow gold, it’s usually a smart move to stay traditional on this one.

6. Think shape

Band shapes can be broken down into three main styles: court, D and flat shapes. The first has a softly rounded exterior surface, proving the most popular for wedding ring buyers. D shaped styles are domed, thus having a more pronounced profile and last but not least, flat bands have an unsurprisingly flat surface and sides (a more contemporary design than the previous two). For the ultimate pair, chose a wedding band in the same shape as the engagement ring.

7. Don’t forget width

Also governed by the engagement ring, is the wedding band’s width. Wedding bands are usually the same width or very slightly wider than the engagement ring. Whether you’re looking at a gem set wedding ring or a plain band also comes into play here as gems will require a certain width of band.

8. Straight or fitted?

Whether you go for a straight or a fitted (curved) ring is again largely determined by the shape of the engagement ring. If the collet (setting) is high and does not protrude from the ring, then a straight wedding band can be comfortable worn next to it. However, with a low or protuberant setting, such as those seen on many halo type designs, this may not be possible. Instead, the fitted ring has a slight curve which takes it out of the way of the engagement ring setting whilst allowing for the rest of the ring to sit snugly alongside. The degree of the curve will depend on the setting on the engagement ring and can take into account solitaire gemstones or multiple stones. A slight curve will also ensure that if you opt for a diamond set wedding band, the stones will not be obscured by the engagement ring.

9. Style over trend

Whilst the latest catwalk trends and celebrity looks can be hugely inspirational, constantly remind yourself that these rings are for life. The neon bright heels you saw Beyoncé rocking are now stood sadly, in replica form, at the bottom of your wardrobe and you’ve gone off them already. The same can’t happen to your bridal set so try to focus on what really reflects your individuality for the long-term and not the latest fashion fad you’re into.

10. Name your price

There are no rules when it comes to the price you should spend on engagement and wedding rings. Gone are the days when men feel forced to splurge at least two months’ salary and so on. Therefore, have a clear idea of price in mind before you start looking at beautiful designs and get carried away! Be sure to consider looking at bridal sets, a matching set of rings to include an engagement ring and wedding band, as this could not only make the job of choosing complementing rings easier but also save you money.
