Hayley Newton is helping to tone up your arms this week

Oh no the dreaded bat wings!!!!

My mother calls them Angel Wings or love pillows for the grandchildren to lie in!

It's true that as we get older, firming up certain parts of our bodies isn't as easy as it once was.

Cardio will help with the fat.  However, strength training will tone you up and you could start with dumbbells or a resistant band.

There's no way to trim fat off by concentrating on one area. That's not how fat loss works. However toning is a different thing. Remember what I always say... you can't do one without the other. You NEED to do the cardio AND the toning. It's very important you remember this when working out.

Arm muscles respond best when you do brief toning exercises daily. I'm not talking about a whole workout, but quick bursts of activity focused on the upper body. If you work in an office like my mother, try triceps dips a couple of times a day using the office chair

Tricep Bench Dip

1. Start by placing your hands on a bench or the edge of a secure chair, and your feet are on the ground with your legs semi straight.

2. Proceed to bend your arms until they are bent to about 90 degrees.

3. Return to the starting position and repeat for the desired repetitions.

4. Do 3 sets of 15 repetitions if you can. If it feels too hard, be sensible,  just do a few (safety first) and work your way up. Always set yourself achievable goals so you never get disheartened if you can't achieve them.

Maybe then in the evening before bed, do a couple of sets of push ups and dangles from a pull up bar. You can buy a pull up bar that rests between your door frame. They're very easy to assemble.

Nothing symbolizes fitness quite like the simple push-up. It tests your entire body by engaging every part of it -- arms, chest, abdomen, hips and legs. Doing them is the easiest, fastest and most effective way to get fit.

Your body will decide - based on genetics - where the fat comes off first, and where your problem areas are. Most women have a problem with batwings, so that's pretty common. You are not alone. The only thing that takes it off is nutrition, strength, and cardio.

To lose fat from ANY area on your body, the best approach is 1) eating healthy whole foods in a calorie deficit 2) doing TOTAL BODY strength and 3) doing cardio. This is the "only rule" of fat loss.

Remember, everything thats good takes time. Please don't get deflated if you can't see changes immediately. It is best to lose weight and tone up over a longer period, and then you'll have a great chance at sustaining your ideal body. If you lose weight quickly and rapidly, it will increase your chances of the weight jumping back on.
