Why not workout on the beach?

Why not workout on the beach?

For many of us a holiday is the perfect time to relax whilst enjoying some great weather – and food. Although it’s important to unwind, we must be careful with our food choices as too many ice creams and lounging around on a sun bed can see the pounds pile on quickly – even after just 1 week.

Fitness expert at The Chelsea Club and the ‘face of FAME’, Neil Johnson - personal trainer to the stars, is hand to ensure we come back from holiday looking fabulous.

Neil believes that a small work out of just 10 minutes a day can make all the difference and is a worthwhile investment, which will also mean all our pre-holiday workouts don’t go to waste.  These tips and tricks have been designed to be performed on the beach and pool side…so now there really is no excuse.

#1: Sand & Water Running

Running on soft sand provides added resistance, meaning that the body is forced to work harder and it adds another dimension to your run as the route isn’t smooth. A 10 minute run across the beach front is great for a quick warm up and you will soon start to feel the heart pumping and the body warming up. This can be extended by running from the beach into the water at waist height. Like sand, water adds another level of resistance making the workout harder for those that wish to.

#2: Beach Ball Sit Ups

The beach ball is the perfect holiday prop to assist quick bursts of exercise. Grab a friend and as one of you lies on the floor in a sit up position, the partner needs to stands at their feet. Whoever is lying down must take the beach ball and throw it to their partner as they ‘sit up’. The partner must throw it back when their partner returns to the floor. When you can’t take it anymore – switch! This is guaranteed to fire up your metabolism and engage your abdomen muscles.

#3: Beach Acrobats

Handstands, cartwheels…we used to do them endlessly when we were kids and the beach is the perfect place to practise your acrobatics! Both of these moves help balance and toning, particularly in your arms and stomach for handstands. So whether it’s up against a beach hut of if your confident enough to go freestanding, rekindle your love for gymnastics!

#4: Sand Castle Weights

Ever picked up a bucket of sand or water and realised it’s actually quite heavy? Why not make the most of the trips you make up and down the beach to collect sand and water by running with a full bucket in each hand.

#5: Frisbee

Believe it or not, Frisbee can burn up to 6 calories a minute! Commit to playing with lots of energy for 10 minutes twice a day and you could have burned 120 calories before sunset plus you’ll have worked most areas of your body including the waist, legs and arms. The best bit? It won’t even feel like exercise!
